TODAY FOREVER - Relationshipwrecks (CD)
.jpg)

Als da wären Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), Chris #2 (Anti-Flag), Scott Wade (ex-Comeback Kid), Chris Hannah (Propagandhi), Paul Rousseau (Burst & Bloom), Jimmy Stadt (Polar Bear Club), Daniel Tremblay (I Am Committing A Sin), Mike Hranica (The Devil Wears Prada), and Nick Diener (The Swellers) und Liam Cormier (Cancer Bats).

WALKING WITH STRANGERS - Hardships (CD)

DO OR DIE - The Downfall Of The Human Race (CD)

NO SECOND CHANCE Never Ending Fear (CD)

The young Londonians formed just last year and things for them seem to move on a rather hectic pace. Lotta gigs in UK and Europe and a demo followed up by this “NEVER ENDING FEAR”.
The five-some shelved out a collection of hard hitting songs saturated in a hostile sound and raging aggression. A good mix of the best European and Us metallic hardcore. Heavy, brutal and unrelenting, and with a few gang style sing along.
Lyrically they deal with personal life struggles and goes political on tracks like the title track…“when the kings wages war it’s the poor that die. Open your eyes. Open your mind”.
Not liking much the gruesome street violence themed cover artwork indeed.
NO SECOND CHANCE are working really hard to build a reputation for themselves as top dogs of the beatdown genre among the EU scene, and this debut record lays solid basis on this vision.
I’d definitely recommend this to those who are into beatdown and metallic hardcore but I’m rather sure that those looking for more experimental shit, melody or whatever their hardcore may sound like will likely label this as just average, without giving this a spin. But you know that’s how it goes…

DISOBEY Internal Affairs (CD)

DISOBEY, a fourpiece hailing from Ruhrpott, is not really a new band, though I actually hadn’t the chance to check’em earlier. They are around since 2001. Their third full-length effort titled INTERNAL AFFAIRS, which follows-up to “Got The Fever” dated 2008, delivers 8 tracks of in your face hardcore punk with a thrashy feel to it, some grindcore influences (check the raw fast blast beat driven assault of tracks like “Living Hell” and “Wholstandsdilemma”) some more oldschoolish shit like the song “Retreats and Regrets”.
Cool punk cover artwork that seems to show two icons of America of the 60’s, Nixon and Elvis, shaking hands (or opposed as their record label suggests).
INTERNAL AFFAIRS clocks in 16 minutes only. But, you know, the shorter and intense, the better.
The album is currently out via Horrorbusiness records.

WHITIN WALLS Demolition In Progress (CD)

DEMOLITION IN PROGRESS moves on the lines of some 90’s hardcore driven by heavy metallic guitars and a desperate voice screaming his lungs out.
According to label press-info their sound should represent the new-school of hardcore but in my view their much more anchored in the 90’s thanks also to a raw and almost live production. And this somehow difference their proposal making it more true and fresh.
There is some thrashy feel to some of the songs and it really works for them. They can go fast and aggressive or slow and menacing.
On “Released On Parole” things gets more reflexing and tense with a voice more recitative and spoken words in the background.

START A FIRE - Maybe This World Is Another Planet's Hell (CD)

This World Is Another Planet's Hell".
Solides Album mit starken Songs wie "End of a year" oder "The sun will set on snow-white graves".

BUSINESS AS USUAL - Same (CD)

Zuschlagen!

SICK OF IT ALL - Nonstop (CD)

WITHIN YOUR PAIN Ten Steps Behind (CD)

Before releasing this new record the guys recorded a short EP last year which I didn’t get the chance to listen to.
The new stuff, still keeping the Gothenburg-sound influences, many times slows down to get more heavy, brutal and obscure in vein the of earlier stuff from Dead To Fall. The guys relied more upon the influences of certain death made in Tampa with some disruptive results. The track title “Traitor” is the perfect proof to this my last statement.
There is much of the beefy approach of the Cali school and gloomy hardcore a la Integrity than the more pop oriented stuff other metalcore acts are used to deliver to get their emo girls crying.
The lengthy “Destroy / Erase / Embrace / Despise, 6th track, it’s a piece of melting heaviness where Integrity meet Chaos A.D. era Sepultura. Totally brutal!
There is also room for some twisted dissonant math stuff in the track number nine “Ghost Of Myself”.
Worth mentioning the production. The guys recorded at APE studios (property of the guys in Aperion -another great Italian death band).
While “TEN STEPS BEHIND” has obvious achievements, it definitely isn’t flawless. But even if you focus on the flaws the album contains, the execution alone holds it high, and remains as an album to be listened to.
I definitely appreciated more their brutal take on metalcore than the approach of their label mates FORGOTTEN TEARS (perhaps more technical but lacking of the hardcore edge you get here).
Check out “TEN STEPS BEHIND”!

FORGOTTEN TEARS Words To End (CD)

The album open opens up with an healthy dose of sheer power and aggressiveness in the best Swedish-death modern version the likes of Darkest Hours, August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying brought to fame.
Featuring a barrage of standard hardcore vocals, the album is not a major change from the formula that we have seen from the aforementioned bands. And there’s also some intent on hitting the “mainstream” with sticky sweet choruses, though the five-piece doesn’t abuse much of this jimmick like other ‘core bands around.
After the first ten-tons slap coming from the first 2 tracks the album tends to walk very standardized paths though here and there you can hear some solutions that catch your attention and diversify the recipe.
My favourite track is the number eight, which moves over early 90’s solid and obscure metal riff and boast a maiden-esque guitar solo.
These guys show really a lot of potential and a reached professional level not so common among bands at their debut.
Everything here is studied in each and every details starting from a killer cover artwork courtesy of Trevis Smith (Opeth, Nevermore, All That Remains, Soilwork are just some of the bands he worked for), layouts and a 5 stars production.

MY DISTANCE Standing Against The Odds (CD)

Since the opening track kicks in a Comeback Kid + Verse (bands you’re likely to think of when you think of sincere and emotional hardcore) mention in regards to their musical footing is kind of inevitable. The guys play a blend of modern hardcore that brilliantly lines up all the elements we have learned to love in the recent years. Say the hardcore’s own primal aggression that is infused with a keen sense of melody and sudden bursts of speed.
The tracks number 7 and 8 “My Desert Island (part 1)” and “My Desert Island (part 2)” live of a their own more personal light and feel. The part 2 sees the vocal contribution of Coffeeshower’s singer Fausto, who makes “Entropic”, the track coming next, kind of sound like a song out of Coffeshower’s book.
“STANDING AGAINST THE ODDS” is a call-to-arms of desperation, anguish, passion and HOPE.

THE MEMORY Call It A Come Back (MCD)
The guys debut on Indelirium record with this “CALL IT A COMEBACK”.
The 6 tracks EP, opens up all guns blazing (note the metal-esque reviewer intro…) with “Always True”. Angry modern hardcore with metallic guitars and the voice of Giancarlo spits his words with fury. Fast, heavy that leaves some space to some dissonant notes and little room to melody. The second track “Walk The Line” moves more toward the path beaten by the likes of Comeback Kid giving more space to melody and hooks that stick to mind easily, and a finale in pure old school fashion.
Worth mentioning the 4th track titled “The Heart Is Already Dead” charged with a more distinct hardcore skate-punk feel.
From the opening blast of title track “Always True” through finisher ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’ it is obvious that whatever money spent in the studio was used to great effect, and makes clear their aim to sound as professional as possible.
Cool cover artwork matching with the quality standards of Indelirium releases.
A mixture of what hardcore music can sound like these days. Call it new-school. Whatever.
Definitely worth more than a listen and all in all an interesting appetizer for the good things we can expect from these guys.
They really seem to have all the chops to forge a personal sound and take their game a notch up.

JASTA - Jasta (CD)
Erinnert der Opener "Walk That Path Alone" noch an gewohnt hartes Material, erscheinen "Mourn The Illusion" "Something you should know" oder "Screams From The Sanctuary" in ganz neuem Gewand daher.

ONE TRAX MINDS Spits, debts and tears (MCD)
This is got a very punk rock edge indeed, right? And so have these brand new five tracks that the gang hailing from Abruzzo, centre of Italy delivers through their latest release and follow-up to their s/t debut full-length put out last year.
I could spend a few lines to give you some info about their musical influences but I can sum it up with one word, well kind of, no frills-heartfelt-punkrock n’roll.
This time around ONE TRAX MINDS spiced their plate up with some folk-irish-Pogue-sque touches that definitely get them closer to Bostonians Dropkick Murphys.
The tracks have all a damn good devastating delivery that lives up to its macho mantras, even when they get more sentimental (the closing track “Someone Before You” –that sees a contribution from their partner in crime River City Rebels).
Songs about everyday life struggles and love.
The MCD comes with a bonus video clip of the track “Take Another” and is released via Indelirium records.

COFFEESHOWER Kicking A Medicine Ball (CD)
Well, after 7 years L’Aquila, Italy based quartet COFFEESHOWER delivers their follow-up to the split with Dutch Dependent.
“KICKING A MEDICINE BALL” is a passionate emotional (look not EMO as may intend) effort packed of some of the finest modern melodic hardcore that takes its clues from the likes of Hot Water Music, A Wilhelm Scream, Boy Sets Fire, Strike Anywhere (the voice of Fausto reminds me much of Thomas Barnett), Rise Against to name but a few, and let me add the Italians 9MM –check out their “On The Edge” if you find it.
The path they are beating is not new but the guys managed to pen some tunes which are able to kick your ass as well as drag you into more emotional territories.
Melodic post-hardcore that blends together melodic singing with hardcore screaming, rock tinged moments and some instrumental intensity that displays their anger and rage towards the world and its cruelties.
The guys recorded 80’s Flashdance soundtrack “Maniac”, but I’ll leave you guy read the interview I did with them to know how they came up with this.
My favorites are: “Medicine Ball”, the angry “I Want To See The Bright Lights” and the croony “E45”.
Definitely one of the best Italian records I got the chance to hear over the first 6 months of 2011.
What can I say more, the album is out through Indelirium records.
Check this record and thanks me later.

CALIBAN - Coverfield (EP)

THREE YEARS OF ATTITUDE – Three years of Verona Hardcore compilation (CD)
After three years spent putting every efforts to keep their local scene going, by putting up shows and other initiatives, the guys decided it was about time to put on cd some tracks from the bands who shared the stage in some Verona’s hardcore nights.
25 tracks of hardcore punk ranging from the more modern fringes of metalcore to NYHC and old-school. Worth mentioning: My Own Voice “The Enemy”, Straight Opposition “Frustration is the reverb”, A Faded Glory “Proud of it”, Inhale Your Hate “Fight for your right”(Beastie Boys cover), Reset Clan “Controllo” (80s’ Italian old school sung in Italian), Danforth “Justice” (hailing from France).
Another good project made out of passion for hardcore.

THE SMASHROOMS Questions (7” vinyl)
4 brand new tracks that show the guys taking their sound possibly to a new level. The voice of Gab remains, in my view, their main trademark but the overall sound (a mix of HC old school played in 2011 fashion…I could mention a list of likely influences but I feel better leave you guys to check’em out and make up your own mind) got a more metallic edge and heaviness to it. It’s a sound that is old school as well as new, without sounding forced or faked. Lyrically the guys keep them away from easy slogans and dig more into personal feelings and views.
This release is out now through Epidemic records.
Awaiting to check the guys out on a lengthy effort, I will keep giving some spins to “Questions”. The three-some shows some serious promise with future releases.

The German street punkers have been around since 2000 and “Suicidal Lifestyle” offers up 13 tracks of bouncing street punk rock that blends influences from the likes of Rancid, Ducky Boys, Unseen, Rise Against and Europe based act like Voice of A Generation, Bombshell Rock, Down and Away, Subwaste, No Fan At All, and melodic hardcore punk that saw its heydays in the 90’s.
The title track “Suicidal Lifestyle” is fast in your face anthemic piece delivered with of tons of energy and a more raw punk approach (compared to other stuff more melodic driven, and let me say “poppy”). This one definitely stands out as one of my favourites of the lot.
But the records offers also mellow moments like “Meaning Of Life” where either acoustic guitars pop up.
The track “Burning Flags” was already included in “the best of”, and boast some social conscious lyrics.
These guys don’t do this for fashion and play for the love of it regardless of the results, they prove attitude and passion. Wanna you ask for more? I personally don’t…
If you are punker you should definitely grab this record. This will not annoy the shit out of you but you’ll be begging for more when it ends up.
Their record is out through True Rebel records.

AMERICAN WEREWOLVES Wanderer Forever (CD)
The project started out from founder member Trevor Moment went through it’s fair deal of line-up changes over the years and moved from it’s original Misfits/Samhain influenced sound to a blend of hardcore street punk and Oi that reminds me the likes of Cocksparrer, 90’s era Social Distortion, The Descendents, Backfire (at times singer Samoan Rob reminds me much of Pat), Sick Of It All, Anti-Flag.
The kings of Cleveland street deliver lotta straight in your face tunes that will get you fist pumping and singing along at the top of your voice after the very first listen and have fun with your buddies at a party.
Definitely one of the best releases that I got to review from Bird. And this makes me looking out for other good releases from this Atlanta based label.
If you guys are fans of high energy anthemic hardcore punk rock don’t miss your chance to check this out.
Totally recommended.

TOMMY GUSTAFSSON & THE IDIOTS Eastern State Penitentiary (CD)
I got to know Tommy Gustafsson and his crew through a 2008’s split CD featuring TG&I and Swedish punk rockers SUBWASTE and now I get to know their acoustic face. If I can do this comparison the big difference from Tony Cape's record is that on “EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY” Tommy keeps the thing rough and still kind of punk rock thanks to his grumpy vocals and drunk back-ups from The Idiots.
Think of Lars Frederiksen on drunken night who falls in love with The Byrds and starts jamming with them.
I really enjoyed more their electric punk rock face but you’re brave enough and more into acoustic than me, well, perhaps this one is gonna be your record.

NO GUTS NO GLORY Hidden In The Light (CD)
Well, this was the only negative point since, luckily, music-wise, this record is packed with a bunch of superbly palatable modern melodic hardcore punk tunes that remind me much of bands like With Honor, Lifetime, New Found Glory and Italian Argetti.
There’s everything you pretty much would expect from this sound –the combination of sticky sweet melodies with chunky guitars, angry vocals, choruses as big as 50-stone woman’s waistline, heavy breakdowns; and add some philosophical socially conscious lyrics.
Yes, it’s not exactly innovative (care anyone?) but the guys definitely put much passion in what they play, and know all the tricks to make every single tune and the whole record an enjoyable listen from start to finish.
So there you have it. If you’re still reading this review, then you’ll undoubtedly may like this bunch of French hardcorers.

WHALES’ ISLAND “Not A Dream But Never The End” (CD)
WHALES’ ISLAND, five-piece burst out of Palermo, Italy (the project features ex-member of ValuesxIntact, The Break!, Wise Guys) debuts on Indelirium records with “NOT A DREAM BUT NEVER THE END”.
10 tracks of modern hardcore with tons of melody and some emo-indie rock influences. Bands like Polar Bear Club (also the really well done artwork reminds me the covers of Rochester dudes), Ambitions, Lifetime, Dag Nasty, Hot Water Music and The Get Up Kids come to mind.
The influences are present, but so is their own personal touch.
The guys open up with “We Are Alone” which is, in my view, just the perfect appetizer to what will come up later on. Tons of energy, heavy breakdowns, catchy choruses and punchy rhythms.
WHALES’ ISLAND manage to turn moments that would feel cliché and obnoxious in other bands into respectably unique songs. In other words, they are able to hit the emotional dynamics without giving off the nauseating feel of those bands who make a living out of them.
All in all a solid, musically varied, well produced modern hardcore record that stays in heavy rotation on my player since Emiliano sent it out to me some months ago.
Their career is off to a great start and I’d hopefully bet that this album will be looked back on as the start of something great for the guys. If only they were Americans…

BONES BAG The Show (CD)
Another couple of tracks that met my likes are the gritty “Wild Time” and the anthemic “This Life” (already featured on the 7” split with One Trax Mind “Sulmona Rockers”). I’m sure you’ll find yourselves screaming along the guys “one, two, three let’s another growl, four, five six how many “I love you”, it’s a stormy life, this life means together”.
Well, if this band was to be playing at a bar I wouldn’t walk out and if you like your punk music with a rock’n’roll backbone and lotta melody…grab this, okay?

JET MARKET The Sky Will Cry Fire (MCD)
Self-produced and released “The Sky Will Cry Fire” follows up to their latest full-length “Perdition” and includes 6 tracks.
With the opening “Wasted Time” they show their more passionate and soft side but it’s kind the classical calm before the storm cause starting “Evolution Through Extinction” you’ll get heavy doses of high-paced melodic hardcore much in vein of Belvedere and A Wilhelm Scream, punk fury and insane grindcore splinters the Roma’s guys are well know for.
Considering I got this cd end of August I’ve really no idea whether there are still any copy available but it’s definitely worth getting in touch with the band and ask for “THE SKY WILL CRY FIRE”.
Waiting for their next release this is a really good tasty appetizer.

RISE FROM THE AGONY Shadows And Ghosts (CD)
13 tracks of new school hardcore that, after the few opening minutes featuring a gentle strummed acoustic guitar and a background of classical flavour, will hit you with all its rage and let you know what these guys are all about.
It’s definitely modern hardcore and they make me think of the likes of Ensign, Integrity but I can definitely see them splitting a bill with While You Wait (the other project of singer Fabio).
Their style is hard, but you definitely get a “we’re doing this for all the right reasons” vibe from their sound. There is a very genuine attitude to the whole thing.
Lyrically, they address themes like war, abuses on animals, betrayal and take a stand on modern forms of fascism.
Go ahead and spend those euros on this release. You won’t regret it.

xCURRAHEEx Why We Fight (7” vinyl)
Their latest release is the sophomore 7” record (it follows up their self-titled debut) from a posi-straightedge veg(etari)an four-piece hailing from Manchester, UK and formed in 2006.
XCURRAHEEX (who I learned they took their band name off the first episode of a British war themed Tv-series titled “Band Of Brothers” -checking out on wikipedia I also learned that there’s a word that in the Cherokee (Indian) language means “we all stand together alone”) play no frills 80’s inspired straightedge hardcore packed with fast tempos, solid breakdowns and positive lyrics which focus on sXe ideals and ethics.
With “WHY WE FIGHT” the guys do not bring anything new to the table but the intensity and passion that bursts off these tracks make this a really a good record for fans of genre and those who are into bands like Project X, Judge, Side By Side and Floorpunch.
Btw: the title of the record “Why We Fight” is also took from one of the episodes of the series and the military inspired cover-artwork matches it all.

APEIRON Among The Lost (CD)
“AMONG THE LOST” delivers, through 10 tracks, a rather personal, at times with a progressive edge, take on certain melodic death metal coming from the harsh, freezing landscapes of Scandinavia.
In terms of immediate comparisons, I’m reminded somewhat of the likes of Dark Tranquillity (the voice of Filippo Dendena reminds me much of Stanne), early In Flames, At The Gates, and to a certain extent, the more jazzy patterns and mind boggling progressions (check the lengthy “The Last Page”) of Pestilence Spheres era. Traces of influence from Carcass can be found, too (especially from the second track “Voids of breath” -really a killer tune that sticks to your mind since listen one!); however, after a few listens, anyone can see that APEIRON have an identity all their own, putting in the mix some other non-metallic influences as well.
An aspect I really like about this album are the bass parts: they’re complex and infuse the music with an added element of variation.
“Red Waters Of Acheron” is another track that stands out thanks to some atmospheric/symphonic parts, signature Swedish intertwining guitars, double bass drumming alternated to solid mid-tempos.
To put it simply “AMONG THE LOST” is a solid debut album through and through resulting in their most mature and devastating material thus far.
If I had to buy one metal record a year I would definitely not miss to grab a copy of “AMONG THE LOST”.

STRENGHT APPROACH Stand Your Ground (MCD/7”)
This time around I hear more of Cro-Mags and NYHC feel with a general metallic edge to it while the previous was stuff more about 80’s old-school, but Strength Approach muscular trade mark is still there.
Positive lyrics that invite the kids to never give up or surrender to life obstacles.
The four tracks breath of fresh air and honesty and STAND YOUR GROUND is a statement of everything the band is and a taste of what the band will be in the future. They’ll be out with full-length entitled "With or Without You" scheduled by the end of this year.
Solid production that give a punch right in your face and cover artwork by famed Dave Quiggle.
Out through Countdown records (MCD version) and Demons Run Amok (7" vinyl).
To quote the guys “Stand your ground till the end”.

WAR OF AGES Eternal (CD)
The follow-up to “Arise and Conquer” put the guys among the league of best modern American metallic hardcore bands and can compete with the likes of As I Lay Dying (who are one of the main influences of the Christian metal five-some), Killswitch Engage, Unearth.
Opening up with “Collapse” with good melodies a marked Swedish melodic death feel (the slower and heavier parts reminds me much of Colony era’s In Flames). Really a good appetizer to what will come later on. P.O.D.’s Sonny Sandoval makes a guest spot on “Eternal”, a track that ends to be a cool mix of metalcore brutality and some 90’s rapcore new-metal.
Throughout the whole record you’ll get plenty of technical and melodic guitar work with a good amount of shredding. Vocalist Leroy Hamp added some clean vocals (fortunately their not so sappy as is the case with other acts of the genre) that brought further variety to his metal hardcore delivery.
Production very solid and polished courtesy of the team Daniel Castelman and Tim Lambesis.
Epic cover artwork and layouts by Dave Quiggle.
All in all a record I enjoyed much since listen one and which is giving me some chills after repeated spins.

F.U.G. / SOVIET NUNS Holy Water (split 12” vinyl LP)
What the fuck! There’s still somebody who believes this ol’ shit. Of course, those blokes lived with their empty heads under a rock from ages and didn’t get the chance to check out all good bands came out from Italian peninsula since the early 80’s.
Straight from Sicily I got this split featuring two cool ensembles devoted to the cause of most abrasive venomous old-school punk hardcore. And when I say old school I really mean OLD SCHOOL, got it? No contaminations whatsoever or a crossover of HC-punk with metal. 19 tracks barely compressed in 22 minutes.
Opening up on side A are F.U.G. (on the artwork written without the dots…), around since ’99, a name I’m pretty sure you guys have already heard since I reviewed all their earlier releases (which include “I Wanna Eat Meat”, “Can I Have Your Skull? and “Sumus Animalia”) and interviewed them once. They are fast, in your face, no frills high octane punk delivery, play a cover from Adolescents (Word Attack), and try to act like some high educated dudes quoting the 1949 Nelson Algren novel’s “The man with the golden arm” (there’s movie version dated 1955 and starring Frank Sinatra as main character) for the lyrics of the closing track entitled “That’s All”.
On side B you get SOVIET NUNS, combo that feels safe keeping its identity and story undisclosed. The guys unleash 11 tracks, if possible, faster than ones played by F.U.G., with a voice that reminds me of Exploited’s Wattie Buchan and with some bluesy rock ‘n roll thrown in mix for the closing track “Elvis Zombies Attack”.

FUMBLES IN LIFE Everyday You Can Improve (MCD)
Meanwhile, the guys went through their fair amount of line-up changes and “EVERYDAY YOU CAN IMPROVE” is their latest output, a six track MCD, released last year on Youth Crew and Shakelessheart records.
The foursome, formed in 2002, is well known among the Italian positive sXe HC scene and never failed to stand their ground regardless of countless shit-talkers this scene is so jam-packed of.
The six tracks (5 penned by the band plus a cover) are all about youth crew hardcore in the vein of Uniform Choice, Better Of Thousand, Youth Of Today, Shelter with tons of good melodies, pretty varied guitar work, fast paced drumming, catchy sing-alongs and the trade-mark voice of singer Ivan which, though is not really powerful (at times live is quite hard to hear his voice properly as the wall of guitars and drums tends to cover it), characterizes band’s vocal delivery.
“Showstopper”, the second track, is my favourite of the lot.
Lyrically, the guys are very outspoken and make sure to get their point about the hardcore scene and their thoughts clear.
I heard the guys are planning to tour Germany this summer so if you haven’t yet, the listening to this MCD is really good way to catch up with band’s delivery, which is very likely to toss you into the circle pit ’88 style.
Well done guys. Check this out!

ONWARD TO OLYMPAS This World Is Not My Home (CD)
Their formula is all about by the numbers heavy metalcore with some tech progressions and melodic hints.
Let me say this straight, the album alternates great solid as shit moments to other really more boring.
The opening “Unstoppable”, lengthy and pretty varied through its over 4 minutes, is really heavy with some brutal low-end growl and the usual heavenly catchy clean vocals that in my opinion doesn’t fit much with the brutality delivered through out the song.
The second track “Enemies” kicks off delivering some brutal riffing to leave place to some clean vocals and move to some Pantera inspired powerful guitar crunches and evolve into high-paced and intricate riffage.
The album goes on alternating moment of sheer brutality to other where the guys show all their musical proficiency.
“Overcoming” features some old school gang vocals among the some of the heaviest breakdowns of the record.
My favourite tracks are “Her Best Words Were Goodbye” a track with a strong metal edge to it (it reminds me something of Iron Maiden meets Dead To Fall) and a really cool guitar solo, and “Don’t Cry To Me” which reminds me much of early Dead To Fall.
All in all “This World Is Not My Home” is an interesting records which as said does not break new grounds but can ensure half an hour of fun.
If you are into the metalcore scene then I can assure you won’t be disappointed.

SPLEEN FLIPPER Alchimia Del Dolore (CD)
The Italian five-piece is not really a newcomer being around since 2000 and “ALCHIMIA DEL DOLORE” (the alchemy of pain) is their sophomore effort (in 2003, after releasing two demos, the guys debut on Vacation House records with “Istinto Alla Sopravvivenza”) released in October 2008 by a bunch of Italian D.I.Y. labels (Basura, Red Zeppelin, Dischirozzi and Still Screaming records).
The band mixes old school hardcore a la Negazione and brutal grindcore in the vein of Cripple Bastards with major death metal overtones to create a brutal and in your face assault that will likely cause some real damage to your hears and mosh and pillage in the pit. It roils with vitriolic anger about stuff.
The heavy and mid-paced 4th track “L’Arco” reminded very much me since the first listen of a 90’s thrash metal band from Brescia called IN.SI.DIA (if you get the chance check out their second full-length dated ’94 “Guarda Dentro Te”). I don’t really have any ideas if the guys ever heard about this band…
“Solo Merda”, “Buio Apparente” and “Niente Da Perdere” are my favourite here.
Lyrically there’s something of poetic under layers of seeming anger. The guys sing in Italian but you can find the translation of all lyrics inside the booklet.
If you have never heard of SPLEEN FLIPPER earlier that is of course too bad for you. But I’m rather sure that if you’re a fan of bands I mentioned earlier then “ALCHIMIA DEL DOLORE” is a perfect addition for your audio collection. And this disc sounds good loud. So tell your neighbors that I said it was ok to crank the stereo…
The spirit of Italian hardcore leaves on thanks to bands like SPLEEN FLIPPER.

WHILE YOU WAIT My end My Rebirth 7”/EP
The 8 tracks included in “MY END, MY REBIRTH” confirm what of good shown by the foursome with their debut.
“Someday…suddenly” (which sees a guest appearance of To Kill’s Josh) kick things off with the intensity that made their debut, so great.
And other tracks like “The Balance: don’t look back”, “False people. My scars” and the touching “Among the ruins” (with personal lyrics dealing with the terrible earth-quake that hit Abruzzo last April) are perfect songs to get the blood pumping.
Their modern fast-paced and passionate hardcore draws inspiration from the likes of Go It Alone, Another Breath and Verse to name a few. And if you’re into these band, you’d enjoy this band quite a bit.
While You Wait is sure to make use of the occasional mid-90’s breakdown, old-school energy, and incorporate a good amount of melodic riffing throughout these songs.
The 7” comes graced by a gruesome artwork courtesy of talented illustrator Cristy Road (an artist who reminds me much of Mike Bukowski - if you wanna know more about this artist check out www.croadcore.org).
On the whole, MY END, MY REBIRTH is really a good record of passionate hardcore and every song here comes off as honest and never contrived. I recommend you all to grab this 7” which is out through Indelirium records, Defiant Hearts and False Idols Fall.

ALL FOR NOTHING Miles & Memories (CD)
Well, if you haven’t got the chance to check out ALL FOR NOTHING yet then you may have found a new band to love.
Female fronted All For Nothing started out in late 2002 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and MILES & MEMORIES is their sophomore full-length, and follow-up to last year “Solitary” EP, out now through Dutch GSR music.
Their sound is heavy and unpolished (the mixing reminds me of early Madball and some other records came out in the nineties) with solid as concrete guitars and the singer Cindy Van Der Heijden screaming their guts out with lotta desperate energy and drive.
Opening up with a short heavy instrumental the guys unleash “Epitome” which makes clear what hardcore means to the Dutch quartet. Cindy sings “there are a million things I could scream but I doubt if you’re listening…because for me this is still about something on the inside, something more, something bigger than you’ll never understand”. The track is all about raw and solid old-school with some anthemic gang shouts in closing. “Beat You To The Punch” is fast and circle-pit inducing. “Overhaul” the third track featured sees the singer being helped on the mic by Comeback Kid’s Andrew Neufeld.

FAMINE Every Road Leads Back Here (CD)
Today things seem running not that bad over in the green and rainy island but everyday struggles mark the life of everyone and a bunch of pissed off young Dubliners, who named their band after this dismal event, deliver their debut full-length of suffered modern hardcore packed of songs driven by misery and heartaches.
Their hardcore is along the lines of Modern Life Is War, American Nighmare and Gold Kids, and I think FAMINE would fit in perfectly in on the Bridge 9 roster.
The music is really tight, fast with some heavy breakdowns, and slow-paced moments, and vocals nice, abrasive and throaty, never really changing range too much, which is good here because the music and vocals fit perfectly. There are some “uncommon” guitar parts that make the sound more personal (check “Street Of Rage”).
There not any doubt Famine are gonna have their say in today hardcore scene and “Every Road Leads Back Here” is definitely a rock-solid starting point which I’m pretty sure is gonna turn more than a few heads.

THE SETUP Torchbearer (CD)
Belgian THE SETUP are back on track with a new full-length which follows-up to 2007’s “Ministers Of Death” (between these 2 releases the guys squeezed in an EP titled “Crawl and Reign” also reviewed in this zine).
One thing that got me into this band in the first place was the guitar riffing and overall claustrophobic heaviness that the five-piece has made a trade mark of. And the new record is jam packed of gloomy, metallic and heavy as slab of concrete riffing. Couple this with insanely desperate screams and lyrics that truly embody the struggles and dark days the guys went through over the past few years.
Recording is really solid courtesy of Jacob Olsen (Born From Pain, Hatesphere, Moonspell, Gorefest under his belt).
Those who know what The Setup are all about will be pleased to hear that the band is stronger than ever. And the ones who haven’t got the chance to check’em out yet, well, while wait more. Grab TORCHBEARER.

GOLD KIDS The Sound Of Breaking Up (CD) - English -
“THE SOUND OF BREAKING UP”, out through Thirty Day Of Night records, delivers tons of desperation-anger driven modern hardcore.
The singer André masters the art of expressing one self through music. His vocals capture the raw emotion unleashed in the instrumental channels, sounding strained and malcontent and carry in them great sorrow.
Their formula of intense, screamed vocals, seemingly downtuned guitars, noisecore moments and sludgy bridges creates an extremely gloomy, discouraging atmosphere.
Let me quote some lines off “Winter 365 Days A Year” that touched me…“Where it’s all about appearance, there’s not a gift inside, blue eyes on a Wednesday night, it seems they’re bright, please take me away, before they fade away”.
The guys formed in 2004 after Truth In My Hands broke up and since day one they are working their asses off to make a name for themselves by being constantly on the road and delivering solid live performances.
Together Romans To Kill, Gold Kids is one of the best Italian hardcore act around today and these boys are set to great things.
So if you’re not already a fan give them a chance and listen to this record.
Highly recommended!

THE GUILT SHOW Before They Know We Are All Dead (CD)
THE GUILT SHOW started out in the spring of 2006 out of the ashes of well known acts like Summer League, Ivory Cage, Not One Word and star former members of The Secret.
“BEFORE THEY KNOW WE ARE ALL DEAD” is their debut full-length out now on Refoundation records.
10 tracks of modern (but 100% oldschool in the soul) hardcore-punk that we’ll hit you hard in your face thanks to some politically charged and definitely poignant lyrics.
Cool artwork and layouts that remind much of Raymond Pettibone arts (Black Flag).
“Before They Know We Are All Dead” it’s a fast, fresh job that will not disappoint the ones seeking for some vivid, intense, without ceremony and heartfelt hardcore.
There’s actually meaning and emotion in this music. So just cut the shit and give this a listen. Mandatory.

LA CRISI II – Tutti A Pezzi (CD)
“II –TUTTI A PEZZI”, with a title which is a clear wordplay reminding of another great song from 80’s forefathers of HC-punk made in Italy Negazione (i.e. Tutti Pazzi), is a straightforward old school hardcore job sung in Italian (as it used to be in the early days) that will let you feel the sheer anger and nihilistic hopelessness that so many of us have experienced at one time or another comes through loud and clear in their music.
Definitely a step ahead from their previous selftitled outing (released in 2005) that see a band really solid, focused and passionate in what they do.
There’s also the frantic “Star Warz” which ends with the famed stellar march but kinda deals with love struggles (did you think they were gonna talk about the galactic saga?).
The eleventh track “Senso Di Abitudine” is a cover from Vercelli’s Indigesti.
The guys flew out to Boston to record with Converge’s Kurt Ballou and production is so badass.
“II - Tutti a Pezzi”. Short, fast, in ya face tunes. Need something more? Don’t really think so.
Ah...the album is out also on coloured vinyl.

EMILY AND ORGASM ADDICTS S/T (CD)
Well, this was the very first thought which crossed my mind when I pick out this record from this Danish rock n' roll mob.
13 tracks of low-fi produced garage punk rock with such suitable titles like “Hot For Slut”, “The Good ole Rubberboys” and “Hangover Country”. Their self-titled anthem goes like this “We’re Emily And The Orgasm Addicts.
Casio-electro-L-F-Obese. Superlativalternaiv-indie-debris”.
A plumpy redheaded frontwoman, ripe bananas, leopard leotard, stripped-down three chords guitars and minimal drums some ole rock n' roll fun.
Not bad but I must say I’m not much into garage punk rock with mocking chick vocals since they annoy after a few listens. But perhaps that’s what you’re looking for. Right?

BURY YOUR DEAD – It’s nothing personal CD

GO! - Your Power Means Nothing (7inch)
Lyrically, GO! like to point out that their lyrics dealt with stuff beyond being stabbed in the back, true to the scene, united for unity, etc…themes very common back then. “Me Vs. You” is band’s “out of step” sarcastic-like view on all acts singing about friendships badly ended. There’s a line that goes like this “Situations change and there’s nothing we can do. Once we shared a love, now it’s Me Vs. You”. I don’t really know how much lyrics were to be taken seriously. Perhaps, it’s just about mere provocation. I dunno, really, I should ask Mike. “Speak For The earth” addresses those in the “hardline” straightedge movement, which was anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-gun, pro-violence, and definitely not on the same wavelength with GO!.
This 7” vinyl is a cool, true and vivid document of that era from a band perhaps not so essential but which I’d suggest you to try and discover again anyway. It could possibly happen that you’ll love them. Artwork and layouts are the original ones of the release out on Kingfish records.

This no-longer youths and very experienced dudes know how to play the genre, make songs straight to the point, really moving and fresh. “The Past The Present” leaves interesting after thoughts making this album one that will simply refuse point-blank to leave the stereo. The title-track “The Past The Present” opens up with singer Bigma shouting... “this song is not about yesterday, this song is about today” and its lyrics are all about the struggle of stay true and committed to what you believed in even when the hype is over. They still believe there’s more about straightedge than a mere style and hope today kids won’t be afraid to express their feelings and ideas.
Definitely recommended. Get in touch with Robert at Refuse records and claim your copy.

MODERN CRIMES - s/t (CD)
For the band this debut full-length means a new start and the music you get it here is so powerful, bouncing, thrashy and addicting that once you spin the album the first time you won’t do anything but just asking for more and more, and more. Superb! Period. These dudes are so good at melting a varied bunch of influences as early era Metallica ( listen to ‘Condemned to Fail’ and pentatonic driven guitar solos that shred many tracks of the album ), early No Use For A Name ‘What’s going on’, modern hardcore a la Comeback Kid and some groovy metal-core they used to play as A Perfect Murder. Lyrics comes with a positive edge to them and deal with life struggles, greed for power and the shit going on today, being straightedge and hope.
Read the liner notes penned by Bo Thomson ( long time friends of the band and singer for Snake Eyes, Lone Wolf and Donnybrook, who also wrote the lyrics of ‘Life I Take’ ) that say it all about what is MODERN CRIMES and why they’re still doing what they believe in. Playing hardcore music and bring their shows around to as many places and kids as possible.
This is quality!!! A must buy for everyone. One of my favourite albums this year, classic sound. Out now on Damage Done records ( this label is proving to have really good tastes as far as good quality goes).

AT HALF MAST / VALUES INTACT – split (7inch)
Super Song!!!

NO USE FOR A NAME - The Feel Good Record of The Year (CD)
I guess the fans of NUFAN won’t care much to my words and will go out to buy this CD (well, being this out since the end of March I’m pretty sure some of you have already grabbed his copy by this time).
For those who haven’t checked out anything from NUFAN yet, I suggest first checking out ‘Daily Grind’ and ‘Leche Con Carne’ and then this new album (or all three together, that’s up to you).

TO KILL - when blood turns into stone (CD)
One of my favourite bands around is back with their third full-length effort in a four years passionate career. Roman straightedge hardcore crew TO KILL follow up their 2006 sophomore album ‘Vultures’ with another fine slab of mosh-worthy tunes. One listens to 'WHEN BLOOD TURNS INTO STONE' and it’s pretty clear that these dudes purveyors of premium quality hardcore are on fire here and blast out a full force attack. Those of you ( like me ) who dug their early stuff won’t be disappointed at all with the new album. TO KILL didn’t reinvent their sound like some might have been expecting ( there are always some around… ) but stuck to their guns proving that what they are best at is beating hard and harder and they simply do that so well here with tons of scorching metallic riffs, double-kicking drums, brutally insane vocals and a huge deal of honesty. ‘When Blood Turns To Stone’ is massive and relentless from the opening ‘Abyss’ to the closing ‘Ruins’. The guys recorded in Rome at Hell smell studio and got the modern wizard of heaviest sonorities Tue Madsen mixing and mastering. The killer production just leaves me wordless. Well, if you are one of many TO KILL fans around I guess by now you might have already made your mind up about what you’ll get here, and I know you’ll rush to get your copy. For those new to TO KILL I definitely recommend to check this out, you’ll find a new band to add in your own ‘best hardcore bands’ list and have some great time listening to this shit.
