Ci sono molti gruppi, che mescolano generi come: Post-Hardcore, Emo, Alternative Rock. Quasi tutti lavorano sulla stessa linea…Beh i BOY SETS FIRE riescono sempre ad uscire dagli schemi, ed usando questi generi, riescono ad essere un gruppo molto particolare.
Il quintetto di Newark attivo dal 94’, dopo sette anni di digiuno, sforna l’album “While A Nation Sleeps”. Il disco con sonorità più sul metal, evidenzia il cambiamento di stile che la band ha sempre modificato nel corso degli anni, distaccandosi (mai abbandonandolo del tutto) sempre più dall’ HC e Post-HC e avvicinandosi sempre di più all’ Emo e all’ Alternative Rock.
Tecnicamente parlando questo disco non ha nessuna pecca, neanche un colpo fuori posto: basti ascoltare i riff di chitarra e basso che ricadono con estrema precisione sulla cassa della batteria. Parlando di stile, invece, sicuramente sarà un album più maturo, anche se io personalmente preferivo i Boy Sets Fire di un tempo, più incazzosi e che spaccavano tutto. Ma sono certo che chi ha orecchio più fine potrà godersi questo lavoro…. Buon Ascolto

SHAI HULUD Reach Beyond The Sun (CD)

The first thing I wanna state is I'm big fan of SHAI HULUD and that I do still find “That Within Blood Ill-Tempered” (their sophomore full-length record) my favourite work the foursome from Pompano Beach, FL put out over a career close to hit the 20 years milestone.
Chatting Matt Fox (mastermind/guitar) in the interview we did he quoted to me the lyrics of “Reach Beyond The Sun” that go “Our days are as bleak as we permit. Reach beyond the sun. Where hopelessness has yet to spread” which together the amazing work of art that wraps up the album (courtesy of talented Dave Quiggle) kinda well conveys the positive message of hope the band wanna push.
“REACH BEYOND THE SUN” is SHAI HULUD being master at what they have always striven for “being unpredictable and trying their best not to be your average hardcore band”.
Considering we've been so late with the release of this review I hope in the meantime you guys already got the album (out via Metal Blade records) but in case you didn't I warmly suggest you not to waste further time and go grab your own copy.

The first thing I wanna state is I'm big fan of SHAI HULUD and that I do still find “That Within Blood Ill-Tempered” (their sophomore full-length record) my favourite work the foursome from Pompano Beach, FL put out over a career close to hit the 20 years milestone.
“REACH BEYOND THE SUN” is the forth full-length album and around one-thousand, eight-hundred and twenty five is how many days it has been since the release of Shai Hulud’s last album “Misanthropy Pure”. And this gap in between albums isn't something new to the guys who, despite those who perhaps would expect them to stick to the routine album/promotion/tour other bands largely adhere, deliver new stuff whenever they're truly sure to have something which is possibly gonna stand to the high quality levels they set for themselves.
I mentioned “That Within Blood Ill-Tempered” and “Misanthropy Pure” and since listen one, some months ago, I felt “Reach Beyond The Sun” kind of standing on a middle-field between the two.
First thing the production (Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory fame and former member of Shai Hulud at age 14 when he sang on “A Profound Hatred Of Man” and “Hearts Once Nourished with Hope and Compassion” worked the knobs behind the soundboard this time around) still allows to hear all the things they laid down but at the same time manages to keep a more straight-forward hardcore feel to it than it happened with the more metallic and slick produced “ Misanthropy Pure”.
Musically Shai Hulud manages to sound just like themselves patching together an array of rough emotions, heaviness, tensions, gang vocals (that saw many friends of the band checking in in the studio to offer their contribute) and a little amount of melodic touches which kinda help to ease those tensions and break that feel of frantic turmoil like you're stranded in a lost outer space which builds up during the listening of the songs. There's still some room for challenging progressions and odd atmosphere like in the track entitled “Think the Adder Benign”.
Staying true to their trade mark the 3 minutes title track ends up sounding to me like the catchy one of the lot -and that's not a bad thing at all. Ad un anno di distanza dall’ uscita di "Exister", gli HOT WATER MUSIC in collaborazione con la No Idea Records, pubblicano il loro secondo live in carriera: Live in Chicago 2013. Il live composto da 30 canzoni, suddiviso in 2 CD, è un mix di canzoni che hanno segnato la storia della band di Gainesville. Il live parte con l’energica e veloce Fight And A Crasch, ma varia con i brani che hanno contraddistinto gli Hot Water Music dalle molte band del panorama punk-rock Statunitense come End Of A Gun, o come No Division prima canzone del secondo CD, arrivando persino alla mitica Old Rules.
I suoni sono caratteristici dei live, ma le qualità musicali della band non sono messe in discussione. La voce dura e malinconica di Chuck Regan, le sonorità cupe e la precisione della band, fanno si che chi ascolti questo live non subisca un eccesso distacco dal lavoro live al lavoro di studio. Questo permetterà agli amanti degli Hot Water Music di godersi un buon live, con le proprie canzoni preferite tutte in fila, stando comodi in poltrona.

THE USED Vulnerable II (CD)

Era il 26 marzo 2012, quando i THE USED, tornavano alla ribalta, pubblicando l’album “Vulnerable”. Quello che oggi mi ritrovo in mano è la riedizione del 2013 “Vulnerable (II)”. L’album è composto dal doppio disco, il primo è la versione originale del 2012 composto dalle prime 12 tracce del lavoro precedente, mentre il secondo CD, composto da 10 tracce, contiene alcune tracce contenute nel primo lavoro, sia in chiave acoustic oppure proposte in chiave remix, con la collaborazione di alcuni DJ; o entrambe le versioni (sia acoustic che remix) come: “I Come Alive” o “Put Me Out” e l’aggiunta di qualche pezzo nuovo (Surrender, The Lonely). Ascoltando le tracce originali, certi pezzi, come: “Put Me Out” oppure “Now That You’re Dead” sono pezzi fatti con palle e cuore, perciò risultano essere energici e adrenalinici, mentre altri pezzi, come: “Hands And Faces” oppure “Give Me Love”, li ho trovati molto emozionanti, ed anche se più morbidi e lenti, grazie al groove e al sound dei pezzi, sono riuscito ad apprezzarli. Tutti i pezzi rispecchiano lo stile tipico, sia della band, sia del genere alla quale i “The Used” e molte altre band si attingono: l’Emo. Il disco aggiuntivo, è sicuramente un modo originale di riproporre certi pezzi, ma si sa, saranno solo gli amanti sfegatati dei “The Used”, ad apprezzarli più di tutti e veramente. Nonostante le difficoltà private nel corso degli anni, sia da parte del gruppo e dei singoli (consiglio di leggere la bio del gruppo), i divi di Orem (Utah), sono sempre riusciti a venire fuori con dei buoni lavori.
“Vulnerable (II)” è sicuramente un album che ho ascoltato con piacere, ma è un lavoro estremamente simile a molti altri progetti del filone Emo. Sono certo che i fan dell’Emo ne saranno entusiasti, ma se sei bisognoso di energia e velocità. CAMBIA DISCO!

I RISE AGAINST SONO TORNATI! Ebbene si: il quartetto di Chicago Illinois, ritorna sulle scene punk-rock/hardcore con un ritorno alle origini in grande stile.
La Fat Wreck Chords in collaborazione con la band Americana riedita l’album Revolutions Per Minute, album che ha dato innumerevoli successi in tutto il globo, con l’aggiunta di ben 10 tracce demo.
Dopo gli innumerevoli trionfi discografici la combricola ripropone tutti i brani dell’album eccetto la cover presente nel lavoro del 2003 “Any Way You Want It” dei Journey; ma per la felicità dei fan, sono presenti tutti i brani che hanno reso i Rise Against, incone del punk-hc mondiale quali: Black Masks and Gasoline oppure Heaven Knows.
Le caratteristiche tecniche dell’album non differiscono particolarmente dal primo lavoro per quanti riguarda le tracce originali, se non qualche piccolo arrangiamento e qualche miglioria nel sound.
La curiosità sta nelle 10 tracce demo rilasciate, che: nonostante un buon sound per essere delle tracce demo, ha la particolarità di avere degli arrangiamenti in diversi pezzi e hanno un ritmo più veloce tipico dei live, ma con suoni più puliti e maturi. Un po’ come se fossimo presenti ad una prova in studio.
Di certo le qualità che la band ha dimostrato nel corso degli anni non vengono a mancare, la voce trascinante del leader Tim McIlrath, i riff semplici ma efficaci di Chris Chasse, il groove del basso di Joe Principe, l’energia dei tamburi di Brandon Barnes e i cori di fondo, riescono sempre ad infonderti carica e voglia di spaccare tutto e di prendere a pugni il mondo.
Decisamente un album da ascoltare con entusiasmo, voi che ne dite?

I'm sure you guys know who BOUNCING SOULS are. If you aren't among those in the know it's just probably because you were a toddler in the 90's but this is not a good excuse for you to live on in the ignorance and the latest full-length album from New Jersey's punkers comes right in time to save you and offer you good starting point to get close to this band and from here digging deeper to their roots dating to 1987.
“COMET” pretty much picks up where 2010's “Ghost On Boardwalk” left-off and definitely fits perfectly in their huge back catalog counting on seven other full-length records and countless EPs, singles, split and Compilation appearances.
What can we ask to BOUNCING SOUL year 2012 (the album got released last year on Rise records)? Wanna them play metalcore-ridden-pop-operalikesang-glam-punk? I'm definitely okay whether they keep delivering some honest bouncing punk rock bursting at the seams of doses of raw energy and melody.
Well, that's right what they did with “Comet”, from the punk rock crackers of “Baptized” and “Fast Times” (the latter slightly reggae flavored) they chose as opening tracks of the record to the more emotional numbers like “Coin Toss Girl” and the acustic “Ship In A Bottle”.

Trust me THE BOUNCING SOULS don't let you down playing the band they aren't and that's why I still have clear in mind like yesterday when at a festival Punkreas (an Italian household name among the 90's punkers) where playing the main stage and throngs of people were walking to the second stage just to witness another amazing sweat-drenched dust-chocked show by The Bouncing Souls.
SNUFF 5-4-3-2-1…Perhaps? (CD)

In questi periodi, stupire nel mondo della musica, è diventata una vera e propria impresa. Tutti cercano di stare al passo coi tempi, seguire le mode, cercare di evolvere, invece contrariamente alle aspettative, spesso, si commettono passi falsi, cambiando il proprio stile. Fortunatamente, esistono band che non vogliono cambiare e mantengono La loro spontaneità nel tempo. È il caso degli Snuff che dopo 27 anni di carriera riescono a stupirti ancora positivamente, con l’album: “5-4-3-2-1…..Perhaps?”
La band anglosassone, mette nelle vostre orecchie ben 11 tracce, di cui un adattamento acustico del brano “The Stock” (traccia d’apertura del disco) e mette a disposizione un mix di brani, alcuni dal tono più punkeggianti e divertenti (sempre con l’ausilio di strumenti a fiato) come: “There Goes The Waltzinblack” e altri dal tono molto più incazzoso come: “Mumbo Jumbo” oppure “I Blame The Parents”, che hanno un’energia e una velocità travolgente. Nonostante lo schema dei brani è semplice e lineare, si può notare, invece, che il contenuto tecnico della band è veramente ottimo e per nulla invidiabile ad altre formazioni che giocano con molti virtuosisimi; ma nonostante le loro capacità, la band ama mantenere un profilo semplice ma efficace. I suoni sono rudi e degni del genere e si sente che è un album VERO e non una patacca totalmente triggerata a computer. Lunga vita agli Snuff che riescono a divertirsi e a far divertire senza cambiare, capacità che purtroppo molte band hanno perso col passare del tempo!
