“Much like past Like Pacific songs, “Suffering” is a reflection of past experiences,” says singer Jordan Black of the new song. “It's never easy having a sick parent. As a kid you think of your parents as Super Heroes but as you get older the realization starts to kick in, This track specifically is about my Dad and his battle with diabetes. His illness has become so serious to the point where I feel there is nothing I could physically do to help. Watching him suffer is one of the worst feelings I have ever felt.”
It’s heartfelt lyrics and propulsive riffs like on “Suffering” that helped put Like Pacific on the map. After touring and releasing their first EP, The Worst…, in 2011 and follow up EP, Homebound, the following year, the band solidified their five-piece lineup with Black on vocals, Chris Thaung on bass, Dillon Forret on drums and Luke Holmes and Gregory Hall on guitars. Over the last year Like Pacific has become a staple in Toronto’s burgeoning punk scene which has paved the way for them to perform with acts like Man Overboard, A Loss For Words, Counterparts, Pentimento, Handguns and State Champs among others, and the eventual signing with Pure Noise Records.
“When I heard that Pure Noise were interested in us, I was in complete awe,” Black says. “We started this band for fun but over the years we got more and more serious, but I never thought we'd get this far. Being in a band for almost 5 years is an accomplishment of it's own, Pure Noise has recognized us and everything we've done and we're really stoked for the opportunity and the road ahead of us.”
The first stop on the “road ahead” will include the release of a new self-titled EP on January 20th. The five-song record finds a dynamic balance between feverishly energetic verses and choruses and cathartic melody as heard on tracks like “Suffering.”
“This EP is my favourite by far,” adds Black. “I feel that our music has matured so much with each release. It's essentially a culmination of this band and everything we've been through over the past 5 years.”
