I got to attend the third stop of the tour No Brain No Shame at Honky Tonky in Seregno, some kilometers away from Milano.
The bands playing tonight hail from different areas of Italy like Torino, Bologna, Roma and Milan with the band called ONODA actually hailing from no-city banding together guys from Bologna, Cesena and Palermo. The four bands are taking around their commune effort in the form of a 4-way split 12” vinyl entitled “No Brain, No Shame” and freshly released on No Reason records and Lonely Raven records.
As the friend Turi (Onoda's drummer) said, it's a pity the house is not full like it happened the night before in Torino; he goes “there are really lotta gigs going tonight in Milano”. But it actually seems always like the case in the city lotta events are being held on weekend nights (and there's actually not "that" reference place that draws the punk hardcore kids).
ONODA opens up around 11.00 pm and despite the band being on an actual stage the singer makes clear that they are a hardcore punk band just jumping onto the floor and running in the pit as far off as the wire's mick allowed him to.
Up next Torino's MALEMUTE KID a band that constantly grows and gets better each time I see it - the very first time was some years at SGA Arese. The foursome plays some punk rock bouncing with energy and packed of melody and a 90's Jade-Tree- Deep-Elm-emo-ish feel to it. An honest, passionate and genuine act that in the words of singer Martu wonders about the kids that get their asses off to go and see this loser outfit and support what they do.
Third act to take the stage are Roma's DEAR DUST a black-clad three-piece playing punk rock sung with a deep-groggy voice with some new-wave-ish, emo and dark horror punk influences a la Misfit (the band recorded the anthem “Skulls” for the split). They come from Roma and it shows; so serious about what they do but so laid back as well.
Closes this punk rock night the homie LOW DÉRIVE from Milano, who last year played a string of shows in the USA, playing The Fest in Gainesville, FL with Malemute Kid. The guys drew the bigger crowd, surely counting a good bunch of friends, and played a bouncing and ass kicking punk rock with some indie rock flavour and solid melodies. Their sound features a creative-effected-guitar work that helps broadening the standard punching punk rock structure. I had just got to see their t-shirts sported by some kid but never actually took the time to check'em out. Shame on me!
Well, with 80 km ahead to drive home I leave the venue with the comforting feel to have really attended a good punk rock event featuring bands equally solid that represent in their own way some of the good of Italian scene has currently to offer.
Who didn't come just missed something. Hopefully you won't miss these bands when they play near to you.
Sorry for the shitty live pic but I was out without camera and had only my old mobile -let's say it's more punk...
