Almost an intimate concert for Winnipeg’s COMEBACK KID, at Circolo Magnolia, Milano, last night. But it has been an intense and sweaty one as those in the crowd can easily attest this.
The Canadians played a tight powerful show picking up songs from older records like “Wake The Dead” (2005) and “Broadcasting” (2007) and new ones; including “I’ll Be That”, for which they just released a music video, and that Andrew Neufeld stated they had rehearsed a couple of time only, with new bass player filling in for this tour, and he was likely to fuck it up forgetting the words (it didn’t go that bad, c’mon). It was a hardcore show and Andrew didn’t waste time waiting for somebody telling him he could go over the metal barriers to interact with the kids and have them sing along.
As I expected Comeback Kid wrapped the gig up with the classic “Wake The Dead” and kids just went ape one last time -in my book, this is one of the best tunes hardcore music produced in 2000’s, from one of the seminal punk hardcore bands of the period.
The opening act was Washington D.C.’s WALK THE PLANK, a gritty punk rock hardcore five-some, which just released a new EP titled “Void Trader”.
In the best 80’s punk hardcore fashion the band plays some fresh political punk rock mixed with pretty original rhythms, melodies ang guitar riffs that helps them parting ways with the codes; pop-punk, melodic punk, melodic hardcore, street punk, post punk, garage punk, surf punk…and the likes.
A honest loud, angular show for those, not many, truth be told, who did show up early; quarter past 9.00 pm is rather early in Italy even on a week evening.
Second up, TEMPEST, the five-piece formed last year, and already labelled the “eco-warriors” hardcore band, features some dudes and a gal who have been actively involved with the ocean preservation organization Sea Shepherd and hardcore bands around a few years ago –“siamo dei vecchiardi” as xJoshx stated.
Tonight xJoshx (ex To Kill’s front man) and his buddies play their ninth concert since their inception but it doesn’t show at all; the band is already pretty tight and unleashes their concrete-solid mix of 90’s inspired and modern metallic hardcore fury on the growing and nosier crowd. Tempest is definitely one of the newest and hottest hardcore bands to be on the look out for; so far so good…
Bottom line: a hardcore show you had to attend, if you haven't.
