HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS Hope (MCD)

The guys from Ohio are already in studio recording the follow-up to the record I'm gonna review here.
"HOPE" is HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS album no.6 (don't consider the info at wiki since this time they are really outdated).
The 8-track MCD "Hope", released last year, follows-up to "Hate" and keeps a trait d'union with the former starting from the opening track "There Was A Kid pt.2".
This number is mellow atmosphere with a storytelling feel to it (the narrator voice kinda reminds me some spoken/rap a la Linkin Park). A song of hope based on kid who had to struggle while growing up in a trailer with an alcoholic father and an hardworking mother without much self-esteem. A child voice states, at the end of the track, "hope means you really want someone to come back".
“New Winter” kicks off in Hawthorne Heights signature style. A solid piece that cannot reminds you of “If Only You Were Lonely” and the debut “The Silence In Black And White”. The passionate voice of JT Woodruff is still there backed-up by some powerful backing voices when the song/melody requires for it.
The third song entitled “Running In Place NIKI AM” is power-pop-punk with the alternating clean and screamed vocals (the latter were normally delivered by Casey Calvert -band's guitar player who died in 2007 for accidental causes- and now have been taken over by lead guitarist Micha Carli).
“Hope”, the title track, has much of a Smashing Pumpkins meets HH feel.
I had lost contact with these guys for many years but I'm really happy I've got the chance to get back in their loop for reviewing this record and having the chance to interview drummer Eron Bucciarelly in Milan (sorry for the delay in posting it -this will be done shortly).
If any of the younger readers had never heard of HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS I warmly suggest you to grab this record (out through band's own imprint) and check out the back catalog as well. This waiting for the new stuff to available for us to listen.

SUBWASTE/STABBED IN BACK Allies (7” vinyl)

What could we actually do without our doses of punk rock?
"ALLIES" is a 7” split vinyl released in the second half of 2012 through Warbird entertainment.
Our dudes at Warbird put together this record in light of the end of summer Euro tour that saw Örebro's SUBWASTE and Albuquerque, NM's STABBED IN BACK.
Two punk rock ensembles, two sides and two songs each (you know how it goes, right?).
Opens up Subwaste with the track “Umbrella” (don't worry it's not a cover of Rihanna's hit) a stripped down punk rock lead by the ungracious vocals by Tobbe. “Skeleton Key” the one I dig more has some vocals and a feel a la Bad Religion.
Turn the disc and it's time for Stabbed In Back to kick in with “Cave In” and “Parasighting” that somehow remind me more of the Cali melodic punk stuff tinged with hardcore.
Both bands are gonna be featured on two different 4-way 7-inch splits out this Spring on Warbird Ent.
Nice record.

DROWNING IN PRECONCEPTION What's Wrong? (MCD)

Whoaaa! Some heavy and gritty HC shit a la Terror and Madball here. The name of the band? Well, DROWNING IN PRECONCEPTION. Say anything to you?
This quartet formed in 2011 hails from Wetzlar, Germany and debuts with "WHAT'S WRONG?", a 5-track self-released EP.
The sound is very heavy and the vocals are brutal to say the least. Tobi (vocals) spits out his social consciousness charged lyrics since the opening and title track to the one put in closure “Back Down To Earth”.
Take a look at this, look at this, what's wrong with this world? What's wrong? -he sings.
The track no.3 “Escape” after kicking off like a crazy steamroller adds to the mix a bit of muddy heaviness a la Down and Corrosion Of Conformity.
Cool black/white cover artwork and layout. Old school a la 7 Seconds and Discharge (just the feel not the photage).
I love this sound so no surprise it's been kinda love at first listen here.
Buy this record at their show but you can download it for free checking the link in their fb page.

TITLE FIGHT Floral Green (CD)

Some post-emo-indie-HC packed with right doses of heaviness, angular dissonances, catchy melodies and a dirty voice. We're not that far away from Jade Tree territories.
"Like A Ritual" make me think of Husker Dü and then at some point gets spacey (not like Hawkwind, really).
“Secret Society” open up with a bass sounding thick beefy as I love it to be and keeps on with a mid paced dirty rock punk.
Never heard of this Kingston, PA's based foursome but SideOneDummy records (Rude records in Italy) had really good taste signing them.
Definitely less by the numbers than one might expect it to be reading the tags I wrote in opening. Listen to it to understand.

APOLOGIES, I HAVE NONE London (LP)

Four young boys from London playing some pop punky ROCK rich of good melodies, catchy hooks and enough verve to get a pit into frenzy while they'll be delivering their stuff up on stage.
This is what could sum up what APOLOGIES, I HAVE NONE is all about.
The Londonian have been around for some years now (originally as a duo) and their first release dates 2009.
“LONDON”, their debut on the long distance, follows-up to a 3-way 12” cover split with Calvinball and Onsind (out on Specialist Subject records in 2011).
Two tracks, namely “Sat In Vicky Park” and “Joiners And The Windmills”, were already available on their 2010's 7” and have re-recorded and have a much better sound then in the original version.
We've got also piano ballads entitled “Foundations” which seems fits well the view this guys have of their project. Luckily, to me, “Foundations” is not put as a closure number but before the curtains draw on this record we have still a piece, “Long Gone” which sparks of a good amount of rockish energy.
Nice surprise! -out via Uncle M.

DANKO JONES Rock And Roll Is Black And Blue (CD)

I've been hearing of this Canuck musician since the very beginning of his long career that dates back to 2001 the year of the release of the debut “I'm Alive And On Fire” via Bad Taste records.
And I also reviewed is work dated 2008 and titled “Never Too Loud” but I cannot really say I cared much about Danko.
“Rock N' Roll Is Black And Blue” follows-up to 2010 “Below The Belt” on after a quick comparison listen on spotify it seems Danko stuck with the hard rock boogie blues metal punky blend of music he's made himself known for.
I don't know how much it fits but the opening track “Terrified” reminds me of Monster Magnet.
If you're a fan of head-shaved musician I assume you won't be disappointed. It's something like AC/DC fans know well you won't get bad surprised. Classic 100% road tested stuff.
I personally say this disappointed me, all in all, but I have feel too that I will forget this record very soon.
