KID ARMOR is a Mission Viejo, Southern Orange County, CA based straight edge five piece that formed in 2010 and “Better Days” is their first 7” and follow-up to 2012's “KXA” demo.
I just loved this wax since the very first listen for the freshness positive energy and cool mix of the more pissed-off old-school formula with the sun-kissed bounciness of So-Cal punk rock likes of Adolescents, Angry Samoans, Fear and also early The Offspring.
Like the modern age kid-armored HC straight-edge warrior, brilliantly illustrated by Javi on the cover sleeve, of which I was blabbing about opening this review, KID ARMOR matches the positive-outlook of their lyrics with some music which would make enough as a legal entertainment arm-free drug for anybody who looks for steaming all the pent-up anger and alienation caused by this century life to channel into a positive change -quoting “Better Days” lyrics...“think back to what holds value, not the dirt you own, but the people that surround you”.

LIGHT YOUR ANCHOR Hopesick (CD)by K.Reid
Con grande sorpresa mi ritrovo in mano HOPESICK, album dei LIGHT YOUR ANCHOR. Che è stato un autentica sorpresa positiva. La band tedesca mette in luce il suo talento con 12 tracce, che sono un autentico mix di energia ed emotività. Il quintetto di amburgo, ha un gran tiro, e ci è mancato poco che non mi esplodessero i vetri di casa… CHE GRINTA. Questo full lenght è un chiaro segno che l’HC-Melodic con i contro-cazzi non è solo di casa negli States. A parte l’unica traccia Acoustic “Carry On” (traccia di chiusura), tutte le altre tracce sono in parte veloci, ma anche il Post-Hc non è sminuito in questo disco ed è veramente un piacere gustarselo. La band lavora bene sotto tutti punti di vista, cori, soli di chitarra, basso, batteria, stop & go... IMPECCABILI. Però c’è anche da dire, che sono veramente curioso di vederli dal vivo, perché i suoni sono una bomba esplosiva, ma si sa, è dal vivo che dovranno dimostrare il loro valore.
Sono evidenti le influenze a molte band di riferimento come Satanic Surfers e Belvedere, ma è veramente un lavoro pregevole e di impatto notevole. Se sei un amante dell’ Hc-Melodic quello vero e amante della pura velocità, non rimarrai sicuramente deluso… SPETTACOLO!!!

SPLEEN FLIPPER The Will To Kill (CD)by marcs77
What a blast! That's one of the very first thoughts after giving a listen to the new and third full-length album from Crema, Italy's hardcore five-some SPLEEN FLIPPER (a band with a proficiently 13 years “career” under its Italian hardcore heavy-weight belt).
“THE WILL TO KILL” takes the Spleen's sound a notch up toward a flesh-ripping, brutal and uncompromising mix of their early hardcore-punk influences, grindcore in the vein of Nasum, Brutal Truth (to name just a couple of easy references) and black metal.
Since the release of their previous effort “L'Alchimia Del Dolore”, dated 2008, lotta things changed. Among these it's worth mentioning that the band a few years later enlarged their ranks adding a second guitar/voice in the person of Marione (Head In Pollution, who quit the band after the recording of the album) and then faced the amicably parting with their long time bass player (Little).
They also decided to switch from Italian to English as far as lyrics are concerned and this, for a band deeply rooted in the Italian hardcore tradition of singing in its own language, comes definitely as a new challenge in terms of new communication options, being able to detach off a proven formula and facing the haters ready to label you as a sellout.
By large their sound got more and more metallic, brutal yet keeping the raw intensity of the hardcore that burns in their veins and hearts and a logical continuity to “L'Alchimia” as well.
Someone outside Italy labeled Spleen Flipper as “Blastcore from Italy” on a hardcore show flyer and the guys kinda stuck to this.
In my view the addition of Head In Pollution's Marione brought in that kind of metalcorish low-end driven riffing that mixed with Catta's more hardcore Pantera tinged guitar playing marked indelibly songs like the opening “Never Draw Back”, “You Suck” and “Don't Forget (Srebrenica)” -for those not in the know the Srebrenica's genocide took place in July 1995 during the bloody Bosnian War where more than 8,000 Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), mainly men and boys, were killed in and around the town of Srebrenica .
The sixth and title track is Spleen Flipper's blackened blast-beats driven high.
The guys holed themselves up at Cellar Door studios with Gianluca “Amen” Amendolara a dude who, beside his current job as live sound engineer for Italian punk stars Punkreas, knows what hardcore-punk is all about and already offered his services to many Italian hardcore bands.
Massimo Molinelli (I guess a friend of the band) illustrated the killer cover artwork and inner sleeve with comics Marvel-esque take of band five member.

SILVERSTEIN This Is How the Wind Shifts (CD)by marcs77
Seconds after I hit the play the song “Stand Amid The Roar”, opening off SILVERSTEIN new album entitled “This Is How the Wind Shifts”, I get dragged back in time of about 10 years when bands like Silverstein, Aiden, Hawthorne Heights, Bayside, Taking Back Sunday (all these label mates on Victory records), The Used, Funeral For A Friend, Escape The Fate (to name but a few) where the mainstream forefront of the second or third wave (if you don't consider of post-hardcore 80's bands).
13 years since the band moving its first humble steps among the hardcore punk scene in Burlington-Ontario and Canada the fivesome celebrates this milestone with an album which doesn't wanders through new stranger territories freshly writing 14 tracks that manage to sound Silverstein at their very best.
There are the signature tight guitar riffing contrasted to more twisted and dissonant heavy breaks, the superb vocals of Shane Told that alternate hardcore rage and intimate emotional melodies and the whole fits so damn well (like these guys have been playing this stuff for ages, no? they did this actually...).
My stand out tracks are the opening one, “Massachusetts”, “In Silent Seas We Drown” an angular sharp riff based number meet melodic hardcore, “To Live And To Lose” a more mellow dark slow paced yet intense song.
The second full-length record after their signing to Hopeless records, early 2012 the Canadians released a half originals half cover recording entitled “Short Songs” as a way to warm the fans up and hit the road, “This Is How the Wind Shifts” will not disappoint the all time fans and could be a starting point to go back check their history to their very first EP “Summer's Stellar Gaze”.
Trends come and go, while the good bands stand the test of time. SILVERSTEIN is the among the living proofs.

MASKED INTRUDER Self titled (CD)by K.Reid
Dopo svariati EP e dopo l’album omonimo del 2012, la Pop-Band americana MASKED INTRUDER torna in pista con l’album SELF TITLED.
Il quartetto proveniente dal Wisconsin vi infila nelle orecchie ben 13 tracce.
Dal punto di vista tecnico il disco è molto semplice, ma le sonorità pulite, abbinate alle melodie, rendono questo lavoro veramente ascoltabile con piacere. In certi pezzi mi sembra di tornare indietro nel tempo come: “Wish You Were Mine”, oppure altri pezzi sono ottime da ballare in compagnia come: “Unrequited Love”, o altri che seguono lo stile Punk-Rock più puro come: “25 to life”.
La band per me, merita di essere ascoltata; quando 4 ragazzacci (consiglio di leggere la biografia della band), con uno stile così semplice e puro riescono metterti allegria con poco, acquisiscono notevoli punti di rispetto.
Insomma 13 pezzi che vanno ad una buona velocità, orecchiabili e ballabili; garantisco divertimento assicurato.

DECREW Worse than yesterday, better than tomorrow (CD)

“Ho 22 anni non sono finito!”, “I’m 22, I’m not over” sang Sottopressione, one of Italian greatest hardcore bands ever. Although today Decrew could sound a bit far from SP’s old school HC, they are 22 now and I think this line really suits them well: yet before listening Decrew’s brand new LP “Worse than yesterday, better than tomorrow” you know you’re about to taste a precious fragment of Italian HC history, well packed in a 8-track album. Since from its title, Decrew’s brand new LP speaks volumes about what being around since 1991 means to them: “Worse than yesterday, better than tomorrow” is a gun loaded with passion and disillusion. The latter leaving no room for dullness, as Decrew proved in a blasting live show at the new album’s release party: an intense show full of power and thinking over at the same time. This is the same magic formula of the album: aggressive sounds combined with lyrics that dig deep into human troubled soul and feelings, but always far from being obscure.
From the album’s kickoff with “My poison! It’s mine!” we’re literally overcome by Checco’s typical furious screaming that turns out to be vigorous and melodic at once. As the listen goes on, it’s a matter of wall of sound and pushing riffs, the whole enhanced by an extremely solid, eager rhythm section. You will spend almost half an hour split between slow-burning crushing intros (Worse that yesterday better that tomorrow, which gives its name to the album) and pieces shot at full throttle (“Home of safety”, “Bad Mind Rising”). Never lacking for those choruses naturally sliding on minor mode that have become one of Decrew trade-marks.
Although Decrew still belong to the big “family”of hardcore, there’s no question that in their last records (the latest included) the almost pure punk-hardcore of the early years has been influenced by metal/metalcore/stoner/post-hc elements, that contribute to the creation of an original sound and make it hard to draw comparisons, ‘cause Decrew hardly fit into one subgenre: they just sound like themselves. Anyway, they have been recently (and probably reasonably) compared to Deftones, Evergreen Terrance -and personally I would also add Gallows in some ways, see “Home of safety”, but the 47 seconds of unbridled fury of “Bad Mind Rising” are nothing less than a testament of devotion to the extremely fast-paced hardcore of the early beginnings, although more well-refined and even going grind, deprived of any melodic features. The LP closes with “Camore”, in my opinion one of the best songs of the album, which slowly builds in intensity and, thanks to its wide range of sections, captures all the nuances of the record in almost four (suffering) minutes and a half.
With 8 songs that don’t sound like each other, Decrew deliver an original and never samey record, which will be talked about (and listened to) for a long time to come. And maybe by different kinds of listeners. As always, I probably wrote too much: the time you spent reading this review, could have been better used to start listening “Worse that yesterday, better than tomorrow”. So don’t waste anymore time! “Life is pain, hardcore is suffering” -cit.

MADISON AFFAIR MMXIII (CD)

Ritornano a farsi sentire i giovani talenti di Berlino “MADISON AFFAIR” con l’EP di 4 tracce “MMXIII”.
Che siano dei talenti sia musicalmente, che a capacità compositive, non si può certo negare ascoltando questo ottimo lavoro, prodotto dalla Acuity.Music. Il quartetto oltre alle capacità musicali viene messo in mostra grazie all’utilizzo di basi elettroniche, ma è uno dei pochi lavori con basi elettroniche che mi hanno davvero impressionato positivamente.
Non è un EP che ti carica per la velocità dei brani, ma la carica e la voglia di distruggere qualsiasi cosa arriva comunque, perché, è palpabile nel sound, nel cuore e nell’anima che contraddistinguono la band; e tecnicamente solo un termine a disposizione: PAURA.
È un disco davvero interessante e notevole e se avete voglia di ascoltare qualcosa di diverso e aprire i vostri orizzonti…. ALZA IL VOLUME E LASCIATI TRASCINARE!!!

MINUS TREE Change (LP vinyl)by K.Reid
I MINUS TREE in collaborazione con la OVERDRIVE RECORDS, pubblica LP “CHANGE”.
Il tutto parte in maniera aggressiva con la traccia “Picture”, nelle 7 tracce complessive è evidente la primaria influenza del Post-Hc, anche se il quartetto Barese mostra delle qualità nell’interpretare l’Hardcore e il Metal-Core in maniera egregia, con l’inserimento di qualche tempo in Blast-Beat e con qualche tempo sincopato. Insomma ammetto che se non avessi scoperto delle loro origini italiche i MINUS TREE avrebbero ingannato il mio orecchio facendomi credere di essere un gruppo straniero, davvero notevole… BRAVI.
Leggendo la loro storia, vedo che non si tratta di bambocci alle prime armi, al contrario è un gruppo solido con ottima esperienza che ha già prodotto diversi lavori e con un ottima attività live, che ha visto il quartetto in giro per vari paesi dell’Europa come: Germania, Belgio, Ungheria, Polonia, Romania, Lettonia, Repubblica Ceca, Inghilterra e altri. E condiviso il palco con leggende come i “Death by Stereo” e altre grandi band del panorama italiano.
Consiglio per gli amanti della musica alternativa e del Metal-Core, di ascoltare questa band Made in Italy che spero possa emergere come merita, perché essere rappresentati così all’estero sarebbe onorevole. Buon Ascolto.
FIGHTS AND FIRES We Could All Be Dead Tomorrow” (CD)by K.Reid
“Blackstar Foundation / Cargo Records” presentano “WE COULD ALL BE DEAD TOMORROW”, quarto lavoro della band Inglese FIGHTS AND FIRES.
Il quartetto “nerd”, in attività dal 2008, sono ormai al quarto lavoro (2 dischi e 2 EP) e sono pronti ad infonderti la loro incredibile energia, dalla prima all’ultima canzone, con il loro Punk-rock/Hc puro. Il disco presenta la bellezza di ben 11 tracce. Tecnicamente i pezzi sono semplici e basilari, ma sono veloci e trascinanti e riescono ad infonderti una carica incredibile. I suoni sono buoni, ma non troppo raffinati, giusti per quello che richiedere il genere. La band è riuscita nonostante la propria semplicità a farsi apprezzare cosa non facile al giorno d’oggi, ma è realtà vera e propria che le cose semplici e pure sono sempre le migliori; e questo disco ne è la prova.
Se ami il Punk, quello vero, questo è il disco che fa per te, te lo consiglio… Buon Ascolto!!!
DYNASTY Beyond Measure (CD)by K.Reid
I “DYNASTY” tornano a farsi sentire. Dopo aver pubblicato “TRUER LIVING WITH A YOUTHFUL VENGEANCE”, li ritroviamo con l’album “BEYOND MEASURE” in collaborazione con la FACEDOWN RECORDS.
La band mette su disco 12 tracce, il tutto in chiave Hc e Post-Hc toccando anche il Metalcore. 4 brani vedono la collaborazione di altri artisti, come la notevole Get Live in chiave Post-Hc/Hip Hop con Inspectah Deck... CHE SPETTACOLO. Il quintetto dimostra di avere le carte in regola per fare bene in futuro, nonostante siano al loro secondo lavoro, la band, tecnicamente lavora bene e dal mio punto di vista, gruppi come questo meritano dei punti rispetto notevoli, farsi apprezzare utilizzando dei suoni rudi e non facendo cose estremamente complicate è davvero difficile. Il disco si sente che è vivo e suonato davvero, da veri musicisti.
Se cercate la potenza ecco il disco che fa per voi… Ricordatevi il nome DYNASTY perchè sentiremo ancora parlare di loro… Buon ascolto e non spaccate tutto!!!

Split NOTHINGTON / PAPER ARMS (7” vinyl)by K.Reid
Ciò che mi arriva tra le mani oggi è: 7inch lo split di 4 tracce, che vede la collaborazione dei Nothington con i Paper Arms.
Una decina di minuti di lavoro, che parte con “Last Town” e “Idiot” dei NOTHINGTON e si conclude con le tracce “Run Away” e “Wrong Again” dei PAPER ARMS.
Entrambe le band si mostrano per quello che sono in questo Split veloce da ascoltare, i NOTHINGHTON con il loro stile più Punk-Rock ed i PAPER ARMS con il loro stile più melodico ed emozionante. Come sonorità e tecnica entrambe le band si mostrano mature, ma si sa ormai ai giorni nostri entri in studio e ti trasformano il lavoro in un lavoro a 5 stelle, ma è l’anima delle cose a farci capire il contenuto e di certo questo Split ne è la prova, ottime le idee messe giù in queste 4 tracce.
Se avete 10 minuti da dedicare a questo lavoro sono certo che non ve ne pentirete. LAVORO BEN FATTO

OLD MAN MARKLEY Down Side Up (CD)by K.Reid
Gli OLD MAN MARKLEY in collaborazione con la FAT WRECK CHORDS, rilascia l’album DOWN SIDE UP.
La band Californiana al loro quinto lavoro, mettono su disco ben 13 tracce, di cui, certe molto veloci, altre più ballabili, ma tutte estremamente coinvolgenti e divertenti da ascoltare.
Non mi era mai capitato di ascoltare questa band, che è già diversi anni sotto contratto con l’etichetta di Fat Mike. Un mix di divertimento tipico del Bluegrass (tipo Country), che ti porta il buon umore e la voglia di ballare. Con un duetto vocale, ottima tecnica da parte dei componenti, velocità e sonorità tipiche di questo genere, la numerosa band californiana OLD MAN MARKLEY, entra nei gruppi degni di lode.
Se hai voglia di divertirti, ballare, ballare e ancora ballare in maniera divertente e spassionata come si faceva nel buon Vecchio West, questo è l’album che fa per te. MERITA.
